Anyone hear of this? Running a car (radial) tire on a motorcycle? I have been following a thread about this. It appears many (SW, Burgs and GW's) have gone to the darks side successfully. Any pros/cons on the subject? Increasingly more SW riders are considering them...waiting for more data.

Guy mounted his camera down there to record the tire when he rode around

Not something I would try..

Our scootma colleague robbovius, I believe, has claimed great success using a car tire on his Burgman 650

I can't imagine they corner like motorcycle tires though. They're not meant to be ridden on their side.

I have only heard it done on sidecar and/or trike conversion. This Kawi at the IMOC rally had car tires.

Good initial observation, I had the same thought as well as several other questions I need answers to. I've read most of the posted info both pro and con and haven't made any conclusions. One point someone made is that the engineers haven't made any "real" changes to motorcycle technology in close to 25 years. All the new advances are in "race" tires, but not much for the touring/urban community. It seems we (and our wallets) are a captive audience! I like to know and understand my options before someone tells me I "have" do do things a certain way Wink

I have read a post where a guy has been doing this on his Vulcan for years and has logged 100k with no problems (getting 25K+ miles of tire wear). Wouldn't that be cool Cool

Quite a few Valkyries have gone that route as two wheelers, and are happy with them. My trike has truck tires on the back, but I wouldn't want to lean on an unrounded tire

Many of the larger bikes and trikes employ them. They mention that the "feel" of them is different, I thought the same thing about the unrounded part. The radial in the video is more rounded than not and it never actually rides on the sidewall of the tire. The mounting and balance of the tire (like all) is important, this tire has a different bead than a traditional M/C tire and is an area of some concern.

Not being an Engineer type..I may not use the proper terminology..

The side wall on a car tire isnt designed to roll and maintain the same size contact patch as is a motorcycle tire..More importantly since the flat line contact patch area has been increased significantly and the weight of the bike hasnt the "AQUA" plane effect will no doubt increase..This is unsettling on four wheels..Its deadly on two....

As with most HOMEGROWN mods if they were better overall the OEM would use them...

+1. In Most cases, there has been a lot of engineering that's gone into a given design. I'd bet that 90% of the "improvements" just aren't. I suppose on a trike, car tires might make some sort of sense, but remember that when a bike tire gets 'square', it's time to change it. Why make it square out of the gate?

Then again, what do I know? Rolling Eyes

For every point in this discussion, there is a very valid counter-point! Very interesting at the least, I'll stick with the Devil I know vs the Devil I don't know Twisted Evil Thanks for all your input.

As your tire presses down onto the driving surface, it forces the mud or snow into those groves and out towards the edges of your tire, ensuring that more of the flat, raised parts of your tire are gripping the road. The more of your tire that is in direct contact with the road, the more traction you get and the safer your drive will be and less likely you’ll need roadside assistance.
